Hurricane Pumps SA has corporate offices in Cape Town, Polokwane. We are the leading suppliers of the best quality water pumps in your need to extract water or distribute water. We stand by our factory guarantee of two years on motors and 1 year on pumps.
Hurricane was started by Duncan Mackie 10 years ago as he saw a need for alternative affordable options to well known and respected brands like Franklin and Grundfos. For over 15 years Duncan and his team work hard to make sure that Hurricane Pumps are not only seen as affordable but also highly reliable alternatives to American and European brands.
A borehole motor relies on two major elements which are either reliable or not and that would be the amount and quality of copper used and the bearings that the motor turns on and it hear where it will determine the life span of the motor it is here where no expense has been spared.
Choosing a pump is really easy all you need to know is the depth or should I say height to which you pump water. When I say height I mean vertical meters. Most boreholes in South Africa are less than 100 meters and more than 25 meters.
There are basically 3 motors that work between 25 and 100 meters and they are 0.37, 0.55 and 0.75 Kw motors and to work out which motor is for you plus or subtract 10 to get correct results.
Examples:
0.37kw: works from 27 to 47meters give or take 3 meters
0.55KW: works from 45 to 65 meters give or take 3 meters on either side
0.75KW: works from 65 to 85 meters give or take 3 meters on either side
It is important to get motor sized correctly because it burns out in time if it is too shallow or too deep it is called “middle of the curve”
Now that we got an electric motor organized let’s choose a pump that attaches to it and again it is easy. 99% of all Boreholes or wells in South Africa us a 2 Series “wet-end” 2/8 or 2/10 and 2/14 this series are common across all brands. The two in front means 2000 Litres on hour and as South Africa is a dry country most holes or wells can not produce more than that in water so you can’t go wrong by choosing a 2 Series however we do stock 4/8 and even 12 series for the fortunate few. The next number 2/8 means impellors and that depends on the size of the motor and an impellor more or less only makes a slight difference.
So 2/8 or 2/9 will go on 0.37KW and 2/10 on 0.55KW and 2/14 on 0.75KW and there you have it very simple and we know you are smart so you can extrapolate for 1.1,1.5 and 2.2 KW
Now for your electrical cable 1.5 mil meter 3 and 4 core will work, the difference in why there 3 wire versus 4 wires is the earth so people would like earth to control box and others are happy to use the water that motor sits in as earth so its by choice.
Control boxes and chosen by the size of the capacitor which starts up the motor and you can always use one size up like 0.55KW control box on 0.37 but never the other way round. All control boxes and pretty much made equal they have a capacitor and a voltage trip switch rated for the motor to stop it from burning out as voltage climbs due to a blocked pump. A voltage trip switch do not last and in time will create faults and we recommend using a smart control box.
The next question we are asked often is can Hurricane pumps or motors be used on other brands the answer is yes all pumps are made to a universal standard. We do however no matter which brand you choose is that when you replace a motor that you replace Pump (wet-end) at the same they are often tied to the hip in terms of life span.
Borehole Pumps we stock from the following:
